Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Alexandru Mihai Vaida
Dr. Alexandru Mihai Vaida brings 15 years of thoracic surgery experience to Concord Hospital, where he hopes to add new techniques and implement advancements to expand current treatment options, such as robotic-assisted surgery.
Dr. Vaida joined Concord Hospital Medical Group Cardiothoracic Surgery in January 2019, specializing in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology. Most of his patients are being treated for lung or esophageal cancers.
He has practiced at small, medium and large hospitals, including Ohio State University Medical Center, one of the largest academic medical centers in the country.
At Concord Hospital, he performs a wide spectrum of procedures, including surgery to implant ports to deliver chemotherapy medication for cancer patients as well as bronchoscopy (to diagnose and treat ailments of the airway and lungs), esophagoscopy (to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the esophagus), and procedures to remove all or part of cancerous lungs.
Current procedures include open surgery and minimally invasive procedures in which surgical instruments and cameras are inserted through small incisions. Dr. Vaida considers advancements in robotic-assisted surgery the next step for his career, a step that will help expand treatment options for Concord Hospital patients.
“That’s where the next frontier is,” he said.
Dr. Vaida said he hopes to help implement other treatment options at Concord Hospital, such as photodynamic therapy, a technique that kills cancer cells and shrinks tumors with a combination of medication and exposure to a particular type of light. He has used photodynamic therapy to treat patients suffering from airway or esophageal cancers.
At Concord Hospital and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Vaida has been impressed by the comprehensive team approach that benefits all of the medical providers and their patients.
